The fine print. Terms

Last updated October 6, 2026

These are the terms you agree to by using This Chapter. They are meant to be readable; nothing important is hidden in them.

What the service is

This Chapter gives one event a private, shared camera. A host creates a chapter in a web browser or in the iPhone app and shares a link or a QR code. Guests join from their own phone, in the web browser or with the iPhone app’s guest camera, without creating an account, and take photos. Nobody sees any photo until the reveal time the host chose, and then everybody sees the album at once.

Your account

You must be 13 or older to use This Chapter. You are responsible for the email account you sign in with; anyone who can read your email can sign in as you.

You may not use the service to break the law, to harass anybody, or to collect photos of people who have not agreed to be photographed.

If you are a host

The chapter is yours to run. You decide who gets the link, when the camera opens and closes, and when the album is revealed.

Because nothing automated inspects photos, you are responsible for what is in your album, for the people you invite, and for making sure the people in your photos are content to be there.

If you are a guest

The photos you take in a chapter go into that chapter’s album and are visible to everybody else in it once the album is revealed.

Do not take a photo of somebody who does not want to be photographed. If a photo of you is in an album and you want it gone, ask the host, or write to us.

What is not allowed

We do not tolerate objectionable content or abusive users. Photos that are sexual, hateful, violent or harassing, or that were taken of somebody against their wishes, have no place in a chapter.

Hosts can take any photo down and can remove any guest, and anyone in a chapter can report a photo from the album; the host sees the report. Reports sent to hello@thischapter.app are acted on within 24 hours, which can mean removing the photo and closing the account or chapter responsible.

Paying

A free chapter costs nothing and needs no card. Bigger chapters are bought in the iPhone app, through the App Store, so Apple takes the payment and handles any refund, under its own rules. You can ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. If you would like a hand with that, write to us.

Who owns the photos

You do. Taking a photo in a chapter does not give us any ownership of it, and we will not use your photos to advertise the service or to train anything.

You give us only the permission we need to run the service for you: to store your photo, encrypted, and to show it to the other people in that chapter when the album is revealed.

What we do not promise

We work hard to keep the service running and your photos safe, but we cannot promise the service will never be unavailable, and no online service can promise it will never lose data. Keep your own copies of anything irreplaceable.

To the extent the law allows, our liability to you is limited to what you paid us for the chapter in question. Nothing here limits liability for anything that cannot lawfully be limited.

Ending it

You can stop using This Chapter whenever you like. Delete your account yourself, any time, from You > Account details > Delete account in the iPhone app; it cannot be undone. If you do not use the app, write to us and we will do it for you.

We may suspend or close an account that is being used to break the law or to harm somebody. Where we reasonably can, we will tell you why first.

The legal bits

These terms are governed by the law of the State of Florida, United States, and disputes go to the courts there.

If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will change the date at the top and email hosts before the change takes effect.

Questions about any of this: hello@thischapter.app.
