Getting started
Do guests need to download an app?
No. Guests scan your QR code, or tap your link, and the camera opens right in their browser. There is nothing to install and no account to make. They type a first name, confirm they are 13 or older, and start taking photos.
Which phones work?
iPhone and Android phones, in the browser they already have: Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android. Guests scan the code with their normal camera app. We test on iPhone first. Android works the same way but has had less testing, so if a phone gives you trouble, tell us and we will look into it.
How long does it take to set up?
A few minutes. You name your event, choose when the camera opens and closes, choose when everyone gets to see the photos, and share the QR code or link.
What does the host need?
An email address. You sign in with a link we send you, so there is no password to remember. Guests never need an email address. Chapters for more than 10 guests, or longer than one night, come with the iPhone app, so for those the host needs an iPhone.
The camera
How many photos does each guest get?
You choose: 6, 12, 24 or 36 photos per guest, per day. When a guest uses them up, they are done for the day, so every photo counts.
Can guests retake or delete a photo?
No. In the camera, a photo is final the moment it is taken, like a real disposable camera. There is no preview and no retake. That is a big part of why the photos feel so honest.
What if there is no signal at the venue?
Once a guest has joined, the camera keeps working with no signal. Each photo is saved on the guest’s phone first and sent while the page is open and there is signal. If a guest closes the page, unsent photos wait on the phone and send the next time they open their link. A guest does need a signal for the first visit, to join.
Can guests add photos that are already on their phone?
Not from a phone’s photo library. The camera takes photos in the moment, which is what makes it feel like a disposable camera. Photos only; there is no video.
Can I change how the photos look?
You pick one look for the whole chapter when you create it: no filter, a warm disposable look, or black and white. Every photo in the chapter matches. All three looks are free, and the look cannot be changed after the chapter is created.
How good are the photos?
Each photo is saved up to 2,048 pixels on its long side, about 3 megapixels, in the tall 3:4 shape of a disposable camera. That is sharp on a phone screen and prints well up to about 5 by 7 inches. It is a snapshot camera, not a replacement for your photographer.
What if the party runs late?
You can keep the camera open longer. The reveal stays where you set it, unless the camera is now open past 8:00 AM, in which case it moves to the next morning. You can also close the camera early if you need to.
The reveal
Can the host look at the photos early?
No. Nobody can, not even the host. Until the reveal time, no one is shown a single photo: not guests, not you, and not our support tools.
You can see who has joined and how many photos have come in, but never the photos themselves.
When does the reveal happen?
When you choose. The next morning works well. At that moment the whole album opens for everyone who joined, all at once. With the iPhone app, a trip or a wedding weekend can open a new day each morning.
How long can a chapter last?
With the iPhone app, up to 7 days, with a reveal each morning if you like. For longer trips, make a chapter for each week. In your browser today, a chapter covers one night.
Photos and privacy
Who can see the photos after the reveal?
Only the people in the chapter: you and the guests who joined. There is no public page, and nobody else can find your photos.
Do you look at, scan or sell my photos?
No. Nothing automated looks at your photos, and they are never sent to another company to be scanned or used to train anything. We do not sell your information or share it with anyone for their own purposes. There are no ads and no tracking.
How long are photos kept?
A full year after the reveal. With the iPhone app, the album shows the exact date. Save the photos you want to keep before then. If you delete your account, your chapters and their photos are erased.
Who owns the photos?
Whoever took a photo owns it. Taking a photo in a chapter does not give us any ownership of it. We only keep the photos and show them to the people in the chapter so it works.
What if a photo shouldn’t be in the album?
After the reveal, the host can take down any photo, and can remove any guest at any time. Anyone in a chapter can report a photo, and the host sees the report. You can also write to us at hello@thischapter.app: we act on emailed reports within 24 hours.
Is there an age limit?
Guests and hosts must be 13 or older. Guests confirm their age when they join.
Pricing
How much does it cost?
A chapter for up to 10 guests is free. Bigger chapters are a one-time price for that chapter, from $9 for 25 guests to $99 for 250. There is no subscription and no watermark. You can run up to 3 free chapters at the same time.
Can I buy a bigger chapter today?
Free chapters work right now in your browser. The bigger sizes arrive with the iPhone app, which is with Apple for review.
Planning a larger event soon? Write to us at hello@thischapter.app and tell us about it.
Is there a subscription?
No. You pay once for a chapter, and that is the end of it.
Can I get a refund?
Chapters for more than 10 guests are bought in the iPhone app, through the App Store, so Apple handles refunds, as it does for every App Store purchase. You can ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. If you would like a hand with that, write to hello@thischapter.app. A chapter for up to 10 guests is free, so there is nothing to refund.
What if I have more than 250 guests?
Tell us about your event at hello@thischapter.app. 250 guests is the largest size we sell, so a bigger party gets a conversation instead of a button.
If something goes wrong
The camera won’t open. What now?
The browser asks for permission to use the camera. Tap Allow. If you tapped Cancel or Don’t Allow, tap Try Again on the page. If it still doesn’t ask, follow the steps the page shows.
Use a regular browser tab, not a private one: private tabs forget everything when they close.
How do I reach a person?
Write to hello@thischapter.app. A real person reads every message and we aim to reply within one business day. If guests are still at the event, say so in the first line and we will treat it as urgent.
Still wondering?
A real person will answer.
Write to hello@thischapter.app. We aim to reply within one business day, and sooner if guests are still at the event.
The iPhone app is with Apple for review. You can start in your browser today.
