For birthdays and parties . The best photos happen after the cake.

Everyone takes photos at a party, and somehow nobody ends up with them. Send one link in the group text and every guest’s photos go into a single album, with no app to download. The photos go in sealed, and the next morning the album opens for everyone at once.

  • One link in the group text
  • Opens the next morning
  • Free for up to 10 guests

Why it suits a party

Let the party take the photos.

Milestone birthdays, bachelor and bachelorette parties, bridal and baby showers, graduation parties, housewarmings and holiday parties. If there’s a guest list and a group chat, it fits.

The ones nobody posed for

The friend laughing too hard to stand up. Your dad explaining the playlist. The kitchen at midnight, where the real conversations happen. After the cake, people stop posing, and that’s when the camera catches them.

Nothing to chase, nothing to sort

Every guest’s photos land in one album, so nobody has to ask “can someone send the pics?” You’re not the photographer, the editor or the person nudging the group chat a week later.

The morning after is part of it

Nobody can look until the reveal, not even you. Then the album opens for everyone at once, and the whole group reacts to the same photos at the same time, probably from bed.

The setup

Set it up, then go get the ice.

A few minutes and a handful of choices, each with an easy answer.

  • The invite The link goes in the group text. Want something printed? Put the QR code on the invitation or on a sign by the snack table.
  • The camera Open it when the first guests arrive, for example 7:00 PM, and close it when the night winds down, for example 11:30 PM. If the party runs late, you can keep it open longer.
  • The reveal Choose a time the next morning, like 9:00 AM. That’s when the album opens, for everyone at once.
  • Photos per guest Pick 6, 12, 24 or 36 each. Go with 12 for a dinner and 24 or 36 for a long night. When a guest runs out, they’re done, so every photo counts.
  • Size Pick your guest count. A chapter for 10 guests or fewer is free, enough for a dinner party or a small 40th. Bigger sizes arrive with the iPhone app: $9 for 25 guests, $19 for 50 and $39 for 100, one time.
  • Look Pick one look for the whole party: black and white, a warm disposable look, or no filter at all. All three are free. You choose once, when you create the event, and it can’t be changed afterward.

A bachelorette or bachelor weekend? The iPhone app can stretch one chapter across up to 7 days, so Saturday’s photos open on Sunday morning, and Sunday’s open on Monday. A chapter in your browser covers one night.

A birthday night, from invite to morning after

  1. 5:00 PM The link goes outOne message in the group text: “Tap this, take photos tonight, and we all see them tomorrow morning.”
  2. 7:00 PM Guests arriveThe camera opens. They tap the link at the door, type a first name and start taking photos.
  3. 9:00 PM The cakeCandles, the singing, and one person pretending to hate the attention. Every photo goes in sealed.
  4. 10:30 PM After the cakeThe playlist takes over and nobody’s posing anymore. This is where the good ones come from.
  5. 11:30 PM Last photosThe camera closes. If the party hasn’t gotten the message, keep the camera open a little longer.
  6. 9:00 AM The album opensEveryone sees it at the same moment, you included. Each photo shows who took it, so you know who to thank, or blame.

Good to know

The fine print, kept short.

  • Every guest must be 13 or older. At a young child’s birthday party, the camera is for the parents and any older guests. A party for teenagers works too, as long as everyone is 13 or older.
  • You can’t check on the photos. Nobody can, until the reveal. You can see who has joined and how many photos have come in, which is enough to know it’s working.
  • Photos only, with no retakes. There’s no video and no preview, and photos come straight from the camera, not the photo library, so a few will be blurry and every one will be real.
  • In your browser, a chapter holds up to 10 guests and lasts one night. The bigger sizes and the multi-day chapters arrive with the iPhone app.
  • You have a full year to save the photos. The year starts at the reveal.

Questions about birthdays and parties

Do guests need to download an app?

No. Guests scan your QR code, or tap your link, and the camera opens right in their browser. There is nothing to install and no account to make. They type a first name, confirm they are 13 or older, and start taking photos.

Can I peek at the photos if it’s my party?

No, and that’s the point. The most you’ll see is who has joined and how many photos are in. Nobody sees an actual photo until the reveal, so you find out what happened when your guests do.

Can I use it at a surprise party?

Yes. Send the link in a chat that leaves out the guest of honor, and set the camera to open when the party starts. The guest of honor joins at the party like everyone else.

Can I use it for a child’s birthday party?

Partly. The camera is for anyone 13 or older, so younger children can’t take photos themselves. The parents can, and so can any older guests.

Can I buy a bigger chapter today?

Free chapters work right now in your browser. The bigger sizes arrive with the iPhone app, which is with Apple for review.

Planning a larger event soon? Write to us at hello@thischapter.app and tell us about it.

What if someone takes a photo I’d rather nobody saw?

You can remove any guest at any time, and once the album opens you can take down any photo. Anyone in the chapter can also report a photo to the host, and you can write to us too: we act on emailed reports within 24 hours. The album is private: only the people who joined can open it.
